Lanvin FW13: Cheeky Chains

Earlier this year I shared accessory details from Anna Sui's FW13 collection. What I really fell in love with was the reference to Christian art and gaudy crosses that you would typically find on paintings of royalty from the 17th and 18th century... think Napoleon Bonaparte and heavy crown jewels. The Lanvin FW13 collection had similar references but somehow Alber Elbaz managed to make the stereotypical nameplate necklace look classy. Yes, I'm talking about Jenny from the block status gold nameplate necklaces (that's actually a really interesting article) fully adorned with faux diamond pave. Classy.

The twist Elbaz took was sort of unexpected: nameplate necklaces turned into oversized one-word statement necklaces (pave thankfully removed), royal looking pendants got large faux pearls, pave statements, and big chains. If that wasn't enough crystallized mutant sized bee brooches seemingly fluttered onto shoulders, wrists, and necklines.

I'm really taken by the details of this collection. The jewelry is taking a stand for juxtaposition. And really, who wouldn't want a gigantic "Cool" scrawled across their brass knuckle region?

Anna Sui FW13: Amazing Accessories

If there was one thing that I found particularly striking about the latest Anna Sui collection it would have to be the wonderful accessories. I have always been attracted to art in Christianity- especially eastern orthodox and catholic art. Anna Sui's Fall 2013 collection really rang a bell when it came to references to those forms of art: from the rich jewel tones to the more literal cross-like pieces. While the church might be a serious topic, Anna's collection was whimsical from the cute dance number in the beginning of the show to the playful yet feminine retro silhouettes.

While this collection isn't the aesthetic I typically find my self being drawn towards, it was just so fun that there was no way I couldn't love pieces from this collection!

Luv AJ Rainbow Collection Lookbook

I'm kind of obsessed with the simplicity and rainbow brite awesomeness of the Luv AJ Rainbow collection. I had the opportunity to see the line sheet for the collection and I can honestly say I want something in every color! Here's a little bit about the Luv AJ designer...

Amanda Thomas started her accessories line in 2005 once her after-school obsession parlayed into her own line of accessories. After a chance encounter with a buyer at Fred Segal, they picked up the entire line for their stores and by age 16, Luv Aj was officially created. Now the 24 year old designer combines a worn and torn edginess with a hint of femininity in her line of jewelry, that ranges from bodychains to handpieces and everything in between. Amanda continues to expand Luv Aj and hopes to adorn the whole world in her bad ass bling.

Below is the majority of the lookbook. Let me know what you think!

How gorgeous are the purple pieces?

DIY Feather Mono Earring + GIVEAWAY

Ignore the fact that it looks like I've got shot through the head with miniature track lighting, and look at the earring! Like it? If you do, read on for a little DIY and GIVEAWAY. I just got back last night from Germany, so don't expect me to be 100% coherent!

What 'cha need:
  • assorted feathers & ribbon
  • scissors
  • 28 gauge wire, or anything you can easily wrap with your hands. The idea is that you don't want to have to wrap by force because your earring will be ugly and you will give up. Just kidding-- it will just be a pain in the butt. Note: the smaller the number the gauge the fatter the wire gets. This wire can be any colour.
  • 20-ish gauge wire in a colour you like
  • jump ring in matching color
  • eye pin whatever color-- the size doesn't matter too much and you can even forgo it and use the 20 gauge wire by simply looping it (tutorial) which is really simple and I ended up doing this because I ran out of eye pins. Oops.
  • jewelery pliers (round nose)
  • earwire-- feel free to go fancy. I kept it simple.

Let me know if you need links to any other supplies. :)

Basically you just want to start off by arranging your feathers and ribbon, cutting them to the desired length, getting them in a nice order, etc. Next you will want to take your eye pin and insert it in the center of your arrangement so it peeks out of the top of it... because that is where you will be connecting the tassel part to the earwire. I hope that made sense.

Begin to wrap the 28 gauge wire around the arrangement so it all stays in place. You might want to do this in various stages so the contents are more secure. You could even try hot gluing some of it together first but glue and feathers just sounds like a bad idea to me. Now you're almost done. Take your pretty 20-ish gauge wire and wrap it over the 28 gauge so it all looks neat and nice. You could forgo the 20 gauge wire but I thought it looked nice and I had ugly 28 gauge wire so I didn't really have a choice.

Now, open the jump ring and put the feather tassel and earwire on it, then close. Ta-dah! You are done. Wear your creation proudly. :)

I didn't have enough energy in me to take tons of photos so I hope the tutorial is clear enough. Feel free to contact me about questions, clarifications, etc.
